Elm Saloon

There are many stories about notorious gangs and outlaws making their way through McKinney. According to the Democrat Newspaper we have a confirmed story from October 13, 1884 which stated that Frank James, who was a brother of Jessie James, the leader of the James gang, was visiting the Elm Saloon. He got into an “altercation” with an unidentified old man. Frank---instead of shooting him---hit him with a spittoon which caused several deep gashes on his head and neck. Frank waited and was arrested by Deputy Marshall Wycoff. Frank figured that it was better to be arrested---than hung!
