Ruth Thompson is the owner of nonprofit Hugs Cafe and Greenhouse, an organization to provide meaningful training and competitively-paid employment for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Mrs. Thompson felt committed to providing Hugs as a resource after noticing that many of the adults would age out of the school system at 21 with few opportunities presented to them.
Since its opening in 2015 Hugs Cafe has grown to the point that there is now a waiting list for employment. To continue helping others in the community Mrs. Thompson created the Hugs Training Academy. The academy teaches students how to land jobs with partnering companies once they have graduated from the program.
Due to the impactful nature of Hugs Cafe, Ruth Thompson was awarded the McKinney Community Development Corporation
Quality of Life Award in 2017.
