"Cpl. James R. Hammond, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Hammond, of McKinney, was born January 18, 1888. He graduated from McKinney High School and later attended a school in St. Louis, where he took a special course in plumbing, He enlisted in September, 1917, and was assigned to Co. B, 26th Engineering Corps, and trained at Camp Dix. As a plumber he kept the water to the men at the front. Went into German territory one time to set a pump and had to fight the Germans back to set a pump for furnishing water to the men."
