"Second Lieut H. Dewitt Smith, of McKinney, volunteered for service of his county on May 8, 1916 at the age of 20 years. He joined Co. A, 80th Inf., and was detailed for Mexican border service. Later he was transferred to Leon Springs O. T. C., going from there to Camp Travis, thence to Camp Bowie, Camp Logan and Camp Pike, Arkansas. He received his promotion in regular order, being promoted to Lieutenant while at Camp Pike. Lieut. Smith is the son of Mr. C. W. Smith of McKinney and was born at that place December 15, 1896."
