"Lieut. Col. Marion S. Church is the son of Mrs. Julia Church, of McKinney, at which he was born on March 1, 1884. Graduate of McKinney High School, A. & M. College and State University, Austin. Enlisted in the 10th Texas Inf. which trained at A. & M. College, College Station. On account of his military training he was ordered to organize the Texas Infantry, and its commander. The following expert from the A. 7 M. College Annual, "The Longhorn", shows his tendency toward militarism: "Major of Battalion, Captain of Houston Rifles, Student Manager of football team, Captain of college baseball team, member of Athletic Council, President Senior Class, etc." He remained in the service until after hostilities ceased."
